Flannery O’Connor once said, “I am not afraid that the book will be controversial, I’m afraid it will not be controversial.”
She had far more courage than I do. I resist controversy. I do not enjoy disagreements. Then there’s the condemnation that comes so easily when we disagree with each other.
So, what I’m about to share with you gives me pause. You see, it’s controversial. Especially now.
My first novel, Rain Dance, will be free from May 7, 2022, to June 7, 2022. This was my plan a few months ago. Summer and dancing in the rain seem to go together – right?
Except, Rain Dance is a book about a pro-life woman who can’t have children and a pro-choice woman who has an abortion. I’m sure you see the uncomfortable timing thing. I almost didn’t schedule the free offer.
My reason was simple: I was afraid some of my friends, whom I care about deeply, might not want to be my friends because this issue has the power to cause chaos and division. That is not my desire.
Then there were the moments I reminded myself that I did not want to write this novel. The idea came, and I pushed it away. I told God that it was a good idea, but it would be an equally good idea if He chose a different writer. To get the story off my mind, I then said I would write it with a simple follow-up plan: file it away until I felt good about throwing it away. Part of my fear then was that readers might not like Jonica (the Christian/pro-life). Since I wrote what I know if readers don’t like Jonica, that could mean they wouldn’t like me.
While it waited in the bottom drawer of the file cabinet, my love for the characters and the story grew. Eventually, I stopped resisting.
As you can see, this is familiar territory for me.
Today, I again stopped my internal resistance. That means in a couple of days, the free month will start.

Cleared Vision

The other day, a friend and I were talking. We met when I was in my late teens, and she was dating my youth pastor. There was a heart connection right away. We share a past, present, and because we’re both believers in Jesus, an eternal future.

For some reason, I’ve been letting that idea that I wrote about in Simmering Softly sit on the back burner of my mind. When Nancy asked about my writing, something inside me, a kind of torrent of words, came from the one place I hadn’t let the story go yet: my heart.
I shared the title. The characters’ names. Then I shared the most treasured part of the story – a moment I lived when I was in fifth grade.

A fire rose in my cheeks – I felt it – and it revealed the fire now warming my heart and my mind. The vision for the story cleared. Sharing what I knew with a trusted friend out loud, we both knew: it is time to release the words onto the page.

Today I will write the prologue.

I am SO excited!
